Game commentator Duncan Fyfe considers the educational potential of games
The trick to enthusiastic learning is the trick. We need to have the right attitude, need to be in the right frame of mind to develop interests in art on its own terms and at our own pace. It's not necessary to instantly attempt a codification of its merits even when the art does not move us to speak.
We grow up viewing classic fiction as homework first and art second. It follows that we like learning best when we don't think we're doing it. We like literature more when there's no studying involved. What better medium for learning, then, than that apotheosis of anti-intellectualism, the video game?

Cloud Computing Is Changing the World

At first, just a handful of employees at Sanmina-SCI (SANM) began using Google Apps (GOOG) for tasks like e-mail, document creation, and appointment scheduling. "We have project teams working on a global basis and to help them collaborate effectively, we use Google Apps," says Manesh Patel, chief information officer of Sanmina-SCI, a company with $10.7 billion in annual revenue. In the next three years, the number of Google Apps users may rise to 10,000, or about 25% of the total, Patel estimates.

Venture capital investing: what's on the horizon?

For the past two years, venture capitalists have been betting on social media start-ups with an enthusiasm reminiscent of the dot-com heyday.
Now that the economic downturn has somewhat cooled early stage investing, some venture capitalists say there's no better time to take a longer-term view. So what's on the horizon? CNET News talked to venture capitalists from the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Southern California, and even Israel to get a read on where consumer Internet investments are heading. Some of it plays into the obvious (like iPhone ventures), but VCs aren't always predictable.
Investors are eyeing myriad opportunities, including new ways to make money from all of those social media sites and building the next generation of the Web. To some that's the creation of the "implicit" Web and to others it's the "semantic" Web. Some of the companies they're investing in are already well-known to hardcore techies. But all of them will likely help change how people experience the Internet.
