About Serious Games

Serious games (SGs) or persuasive games are computer and video games used as persuasion technology or educational technology. They can be similar to educational games, but are often intended for an audience outside of primary or secondary education. OLPC runs the Processing and Arduino programming environments

At NYU’s ITP program, the Processing and Arduino programming environments are widely used. Since my main interest in the OLPC is to use it as a controller for projects, and since most of my projects are built using those two tools, I was very interested in getting them running on the OLPC.

Web 2.0 is producing a new wave of entrepreneurs with London acting as the epicentre for most of the UK developments

"Everybody wants to sell for Bebo-style multiples, but there are not many companies with that kind of scale," he says. "The numbers do the talking and there are not many businesses around that could do another Bebo - but there are a lot of wannabes."

Jeremiah Owyang is emerging as social media's expert on online communities for companies struggling with changes

Forrester Research senior analyst Jeremiah Owyang is emerging as social media's expert on online communities for companies struggling with changes. He talks about how communities happen and why a great many companies will miss the new opportunity. He gives a few excerpts from his Forrester Report on communities and advises vendors on how to succeed or fail while visiting Forrester. he also looks at trends on what is hot and what is not in terms of corporate adoption of social media.

Jeremiah is among the brightest and hardest working members of the social media community, or so it seems to me. He's the guy who produces useful data and this interview is filled with takeaway nuggets.

Jonathan Zittrain - `The Future of the Net (and how to stop it)''

JZ's thesis goes roughly that the Net is in danger: the openness that allowed it to flourish sows the seeds of its closure. Pragmatic, expert-driven communities "got things done" on the Net, all the way from the protocol stack in the Internet's innards to its Domain Name Server (DNS) system to Wikipedia. But forces of organised interests that do not play by the rules, like malware peddlers, identity thieves and spammers are allowing another army of interests---corporate protectionists, often--- to demand centralised, authoritarian solutions. This is the future of the Net unless we stop it.

A tiny revolution - mini laptops in schools

These mini laptops have caused a stir in the education sector, not least because they offer many features found on full-sized laptops, including built-in wireless networking. Their low cost (£169) is partly down to their use of open source software like the Linux operating system and free software packages such as Open Office. This does away with many software licensing costs incurred when using Microsoft Windows. So what are they like in practice?

Design and new media agency Corporation Pop has been commissioned to develop a Second Life island for Manchester Business School.

Apparently the ‘island’ is set to take the form of a virtual campus and will be developed primarily as a learning, teaching and recruitment tool.

The Linden Lab’s location will allow MBS to reach out to a broader worldwide audience, showcasing the school’s departments and facilities – albeit virtually – on a global basis.

Child-like intelligence created in Second Life

Four-year-old Eddie might behave like a typical young boy. Outside of the Second Life virtual world, however, he is anything but.

The child is a product of logic-based artificial intelligence and complex modelling techniques, and operates on what has been said to be the most powerful university-based supercomputing system in the world.

A creation of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Eddie has his own set of beliefs, and the ability to reason about his beliefs to draw conclusions in a manner that matches human children his age.

Our house in cyberspace

Soon real buildings will be monitored and taken care of remotely through cyber replicas on the net — and their inhabitants too:

It's not often you catch a grown man playing with a doll's house, let alone doing it while pretending to be a little old lady. But this is not your average Barbie residence, and it's all in the name of research.

The adapted PlayMobil house is in fact part of an experimental platform to explore new ways to bridge the gap between virtual and real worlds. A range of sensors and gadgets inside the house allow it to be monitored and controlled through an exact digital replica inside the virtual world Second Life.

Sentient world: war games on the grandest scale

Perhaps your real life is so rich you don't have time for another.

Even so, the US Department of Defense (DOD) may already be creating a copy of you in an alternate reality to see how long you can go without food or water, or how you will respond to televised propaganda.

The DOD is developing a parallel to Planet Earth, with billions of individual "nodes" to reflect every man, woman, and child this side of the dividing line between reality and AR.

Jason Calacanis introduces his new search engine Mahalo

Jason Calacanis, founder of Mahalo, introduces us to his new search engine and directory. This is a unique search engine because the results aren't produced by algorithms. Rather people all over the world contribute to it. Calacanis claims that that will bring dramatically better results. But this is a startup and it's too early to say it'll take on Google. In the meantime, though, we think it's a search engine you'll want to check out and Calacanis has some very interesting philosophies. We'll split this interview into two parts, with the second part coming next week. But here you meet Eric Stephens, director of user experience. He explains how Mahalo tests features (it's a different kind of user testing than we've seen before).
