Kriegspiel - game of war

In January 1977, the French Situationist Guy Debord founded the Society for Strategic and Historical Games. The Society had an immediate goal: to produce the "Kriegspiel," a "game of war" that Debord had already designed in his head years before. Inspired by the military theory of Carl von Clausewitz and the European campaigns of Napoleon, Debord's game is a chess-variant played by two opposing players on a game board of 500 squares arranged in rows of 20 by 25 squares.

U.S. Spies Use Custom Videogames to Learn How to Think

In the wake of the intelligence bungles that propelled the United States into the Iraq war, it's no secret that the nation's spies have been working to improve the quality of their analysis. Now the top U.S. military intelligence agency has come up with a new tool for teaching recruits critical thinking skills: videogames.

The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has just taken delivery of three PC-based games, developed by simulation studio Visual Purple under a $2.6 million contract between the DIA and defense contractor Concurrent Technologies. The goal is to quickly train the next generation of spies to analyze complex issues like Islamic fundamentalism.

War for Visual Computing

NVIDIA claims that the GPU is going to make waves into other forms of computing that just graphics: a market dubbed "visual computing" that encompasses things from 3D rendering to video encoding/decoding, scientific and medical simulations, finance, imaging and more. When NVIDIA first introduced the CUDA architecture in early 2007, it was meant for just this purpose: to bring the power of the highly-parallel GPU architecture to applications that can utilize its speed. Intel has spent it's time pushing ray tracer as the future of rendering (you can see articles from Intel's Daniel Pohl here at PC Perspective as well as interviews with top industry minds on the topic) while also saying that both discrete graphics and integrated graphics have a future pointing to its Larrabee for add-in cards and the Nehalem CPU with integrated GPU on die as examples.

CyberCarpet opens way to Pompeii

A stroll around the ancient city of Pompeii will be made possible this week thanks to an omni-directional treadmill developed by European researchers.

The treadmill is a "motion platform" which gives the impression of "natural walking" in any direction.

The platform, called CyberCarpet, is made up of several belts which form an endless plane along two axes.

Scientists have combined the platform with a tracking system and virtual reality software recreating Pompeii.

UK Mobile Broadband: Seems too good to be true. Isn’t.

I took Vodafone’s new 019 mobile broadband USB stick on a road trip and surfed for all I was worth. The press release promises up to 7.2Mbps downstream and 1.44Mbps upstream connections. Those speeds are respectively fourteen and twenty-two times faster than the original 3G service launched all those years ago in 2004.
