Tyrone Robinson, a Taekwondo fighter and London 2012 hopeful, is using Street Fighter IV as a part of his everyday training routine

Robinson, who was the bronze medalist at the European Championship and apparently is one of the brightest hopes for the British Taekwondo team, is using the game to sharpen his mental fight planning, reflexes and coordination. "I'm never going to be able to throw fireballs in the ring like the characters in Street Fighter IV, but I can still try some of the crazy kicks they do," Robinson said. "It's a good way to relax at the end of a hard day's training and great to have a tournament with friends."

InstantAction: 3D Gaming In Web Browsers

InstantAction today officially unveiled its technology platform, which purportedly makes it possible to play any video game in a web browser. Not just 2D casual games, but hardcore 3D games with high-end graphics that would otherwise require a next-gen game console, or a huge client install on the PC.

Tumblr iPhone App - Ultimate Mobile Blogging Tool ?

Tumblr has risen in popularity among the blogging platforms because of its simplicity. With a few clicks you can easily post various types of media without having to worry about code or formatting. In many ways, simplicity is also the key to the iPhone and Apple’s way of doing things, so it makes sense that Tumblr would make an iPhone app — and now it has (or at least has bought one — more on that below).

If you already have a Tumblr account, the interface will be very familar to you. A main posting screen gives you the options to post text, a photo, a quote, a link, a chat or audio. Those should be self-explanatory, but the photo and audio options are a bit different than normal because the iPhone has a camera and microphone built-in to use for each of those respective options.

3D Eyetracking Mobile UI

What if the graphics on your mobile seemed to have real depth? Imagine tilting your mobile so you can look around corners and behind objects in the GUI to access additional information. Imagine layered GUIs where pop-up windows really pop up. With eye-tracking and the real 3D capabilities of TAT Cascades, this is now possible. A concept by TAT

140 Characters: How Twitter Was Born

Twitter was born about three years ago, when @Jack, @Biz, @Noah, @Crystal, @Jeremy, @Adam, @TonyStubblebine, @Ev, me (@Dom), @Rabble, @RayReadyRay, @Florian, @TimRoberts, and @Blaine worked at a podcasting company called Odeo, Inc. in South Park, San Francisco. The company had just contributed a major chunk of code to Rails 1.0 and had just shipped Odeo Studio, but we were facing tremendous competition from Apple and other heavyweights. Our board was not feeling optimistic, and we were forced to reinvent ourselves.

“Rebooting” or reinventing the company started with a daylong brainstorming session where we broke up into teams to talk about our best ideas. I was lucky enough to be in @Jack’s group, where he first described a service that uses SMS to tell small groups what you are doing. We happened to be on top of the slide on the north end of South Park. It was sunny and brisk. We were eating Mexican food. His idea made us stop eating and start talking.

Cognitive Computing Project Aims to Reverse-Engineer the Mind

Imagine a computer that can process text, video and audio in an instant, solve problems on the fly, and do it all while consuming just 10 watts of power.

It would be the ultimate computing machine if it were built with silicon instead of human nerve cells.

Compare that to current computers, which require extensive, custom programming for each application, consume hundreds of watts in power, and are still not fast enough. So it's no surprise that some computer scientists want to go back to the drawing board and try building computers that more closely emulate nature.

"The plan is to engineer the mind by reverse-engineering the brain," says Dharmendra Modha, manager of the cognitive computing project at IBM Almaden Research Center.

In what could be one of the most ambitious computing projects ever, neuroscientists, computer engineers and psychologists are coming together in a bid to create an entirely new computing architecture that can simulate the brain's abilities for perception, interaction and cognition. All that, while being small enough to fit into a lunch box and consuming extremely small amounts of power.

Twitter to hit the big time with explosion in microblogging

Twitter, the fast-growing microblogging and social media site, is about to change gears.

The service where users post short updates about what they are doing has received an explosion in visitors, both in the UK and the US. Twitter has become the communication tool of choice among early adopters and the tech community, a worldwide first alert news medium and a nascent marketing and customer services tool as it has thrust itself into the mainstream.

Twitter is just about to make the biggest shift in its short history by integrating its search functions into the home pages of users.

Until now if users wanted to search the outpouring of updates or "tweets", say for updates about a stock price or football team or a hotel, they had to go to a separate website – search.twitter.com – or use one of the many independent search applications that have sprung up on the web.

FriendFeed Vs Twitter Vs Facebook - everyone wins ?

Here we go again. Over the course of the last several months, we’ve heard that FriendFeed was going to kill Twitter. Then Twitter was going to kill FriendFeed. Then Facebook was going to kill FriendFeed. Now Facebook is going to kill Twitter. But something odd is happening. Instead of any of them dying, they’re all thriving, each gaining traffic and users — and they’ll continue to. So what gives?
